Where does beeswax come from?

Honeybees secrete small tablets of wax from their abdomen which they then chew with their mandibles and warm using their body heat. This makes the wax soft and malleable enough for them to use to build honeycomb for their homes. Honeycomb is used to store pollen, nectar, honey, and most importantly, baby bees!

Isn't beeswax yellow?

Yes and no! The beeswax used in candles is generally yellow, yes. But the natural colour of beeswax is actually an ivory tone. What gives beeswax that distinct yellow colouring we all know and love is when the wax is mixed with honey and pollen during the separation processing of honey and wax. Depending on the area a beehive lives can determine a slight colour-change in the beeswax that comes from that hive post-honey-extraction. That being said, a rich and vibrant yellow is the most common.

When it comes to candle-making, beeswax burns brighter and longer than any other wax used. Because it’s a completely natural substance/material, beeswax releases no toxic byproducts when burnt, making it the perfect wax for candles in your home.

Beeswax actually has the opposite effect by purifying the air through discharging negative ions, helping to draw in and bind to toxins, odours, and pollutants (which are positively charged) from the air. This is particularly helpful if you suffer from allergies or hay-fever.
